Death Cab For Cutie, de band rond frontman Ben Gibbard, kreeg begin jaren ’00 internationaal voet aan de grond, te midden van de doorbraak van de emo. Ben had er dan ook een hand van om de ene na de andere prachtige lyric te schrijven (zoals “And it came to me then / That every plan is a tiny prayer to father time”.) Maar muzikaal had de band toen al weinig te maken met de schreeuwerige emo van die jaren. Death Cab schreef even catchy als warme indierock liedjes, van vrolijke rockers tot kleine ballads. Platen als Transatlanticism en Plans zijn behoorlijk tijdloos gebleken, maar de band is nooit gestopt met fijne muziek maken. In 2022 volgt de 11eplaat Asphalt Meadows.
