Met het eerste album waarmee U2 een nummer 1 positie in de Verenigde Staten behaalden kwamen zij ook wereldwijd bovenin de albumlijsten, inclusief in landen als de UK en Ierland. Met meer dan 25 miljoen verkochte exemplaren wereldwijd groeien Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr volgens het muziekmagazine Rolling Stone uit van helden naar supersterren.
Time Magazine plaatst U2 op de cover van de april editie in 1987 en roept de band uit tot “Rock’s Hottest Ticket”. Een beslissend jaar volgt, waarin hun arena concerten omgezet worden naar stadion concerten om aan de grote vraag naar tickets te kunnen voldoen en er is een weg ingeslagen naar een van de grootste live acts ter wereld die ze vandaag de dag nog steeds zijn. In de twaalf maanden die volgden creëerde het viertal iconische momenten zoals de met een Grammy Award bekroonde clip, waarbij het verkeer stopte door hun optreden op het dak van een drankwinkel in Los Angeles, het winnen van een BRIT Award en twee Grammys voor o.a. album van het jaar, de eerste die ze ontvingen van de 22. Daarnaast werden ze onderscheiden als de meest bekroonde rockband in de geschiedenis van de Grammys.
