About

R&B’s Super Bowl superstar

A seemingly ageless R&B star whose illustrious career recently entered its third decade, USHER Terry Raymond IV reiterated to the world during his half-time show at Super Bowl LVIII in 2024 why he’s been dominating charts for so long.

Eight Grammy Award wins and countless chart successes in a career that has seen the singer flirt with pop and blues as well as R&B, USHER's time to shine at the globally-watched NFL championship game was a long time in the making.

Singing in church choirs at his hometown of Chattanooga, Tennessee from the age of six, it was a relocation to Atlanta which would open an unlikely doorway into the music industry for a young USHER. After appearing on talent show, Star Search, the fourteen year-old singer was swiftly offered a contract by LaFace Records and released his self-titled debut album just a year later, under the tutelage of hip-hop mogul P. Diddy. Finding his feet as an artist, lead single ‘Think Of You’ showcased USHER's enormous promise.

Three years later with his sophomore album My Way in 1997, the budding singer developed his sensual sound and polished choreography, reaching the summit of the US Billboard Hot 100 charts with ‘Nice & Slow’, while ‘You Make Me Wanna’ achieved the same feat in the UK. My Way sold over seven million copies and was taken on the road during support slots on tour with Mary J. Blige, Janet Jackson’s and Puff Daddy. USHER had arrived.

After a supporting role alongside Elijah Wood and Josh Hartnett in 1998 teen horror The Faculty, USHER returned to R&B superstardom with 8701 in 2001, bagging two Grammy Award wins for singles ‘U Remind Me’ and ‘U Don’t Have To Call’. But his follow-up album, ten years after releasing his debut, would become his most influential.

Confessions dropped in 2004, achieving widespread critical acclaim as well as commercial success selling one million copies in its first week. The number one album spawned four number one singles for USHER – his duet ‘My Boo’ with Alicia Keys, ‘Burn’, ‘Confessions Part II’, and ‘Yeah!’, the latter of which held on to the top spot of the Billboard Hot 100 charts for twelve weeks. “Peace up, A-town down” rubber-stamped the single, which became one of the decade’s most quotable, and lucrative, slogans.

A year later USHER delved into acting once more, playing a disc jockey in 2005 movie In The Mix, and landed the lead role of Billy Flynn in Broadway play Chicago shortly after. Fans clamoured for more music and USHER delivered with Here I Stand in 2008, which swiftly snatched the number one spot after the success of dancefloor-indebted lead single ‘Love In This Club’ featuring Young Jeezy. It went platinum within two months of its release and the album followed suit, though personal turmoil would inspire his follow-up.

Raymond v. Raymond came in 2010, and was preoccupied with USHER's first divorce and being alone at a strange stage in his life. Two more Grammy wins came his way for Best Contemporary R&B Album and Best Male R&B Vocal Performance for slinky, mature single ‘There Goes My Baby’. Despite another Grammy Award for 2013's ‘Climax’, USHER's chart dominance dwindled over the subsequent decade. But a resurgence beckoned.

On 25 September 2023, it was announced that USHER would headline the halftime show for Super Bowl LVIII, held in Las Vegas on 11th February 2024. His ninth studio album, Coming Home, would be released on the very same day. “It’s an honour of a lifetime to finally check a Super Bowl performance off my bucket list,” USHER said. “I can’t wait to bring the world a show unlike anything else they’ve seen from me before.” With viewing figures up 5% from the 2023 performance, USHER cemented his legacy as an R&B superstar.

In February 2024, USHER announced two Amsterdam dates for April 2025.
