About
A new chapter awaits the My 21 Century Blues star
Once an in-demand writer and now a global pop name , RAYE’s journey is one of inspiration and empowerment.
Born Rachel Agatha Keen in the early 90s in South London, RAYE grew up in a musical household, attending church with her sisters where her mother sang in the choir and her father was the musical director. She wrote and performed her first song before even attending secondary school, and though leaving the Brit school early due to feeling "confined", spent much of her teenage years in the studio honing her craft regardless. Before long, she was releasing EPs and catching the attention of Polydor Records, and in 2015 released the single ‘Alien’.
The hype in the following years soon snowballed, as she wrote and performed with the likes of Charli xcx, Beyonce and Jonas Blue, earning support slots for Years & Years and Jess Glynne, and even featured in Stormzy’s ‘Big For Your Boots’ music video in 2017. But despite all of the high-profile collaborations, ever-increasing hype and even a platinum-certified single in ‘Tequila’, frustrations over the delay in releasing her debut lead to RAYE departing Polydor in 2021 to the support of her peers and much of the industry. The rest, as they say, was history.
In 2023, as a newly independent artist, RAYE released her long-awaited debut album My 21st Century Blues to fervent acclaim. Led by a string of singles including ‘Hard Out Here.’ and her viral, breakout hit ‘Escapism.’, the album “roars into life, hitting you with one fantastic song after another,” as The Guardian put it. Drifting from late-night dancefloor fillers (‘Black Mascara.’) to stripped back soul tunes (‘Mary Jane.) one moment, then funky disco-pop (‘Worth It.’) to a gospel-backed piano ballad (‘Buss It Down.’) the next, RAYE’s personal touch is a through-line that ends with a smiley thank you to those who stuck with her until this moment.
Having reached No.2 on the Official Albums Chart and topped the UK Independent Albums Chart, RAYE took fans on her journey with The Story So Far tour, before performances on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, at Glastonbury and a special show at London’s Royal Albert Hall with the Heritage Orchestra, which was recorded and released as a live album in September 2023. Her recognition and reach has grown exponentially since then, racking up Grammy nominations, breaking the record for most award wins in a single ceremony at the 2024 Brits, as well as supporting Taylor Swift on the Eras tour and headlining her first festival at BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend – before a career-defining headline performance at All Points East in the summer of 2025.
With new material teased at Glastonbury 2025 and a UK and European tour booked for early 2026, get ready for the next chapter for this generational talent.
